Overview
In 2004, energy efficiency measures were of little interest to the heavy industrial market. Their incremental costs, combined with limited client understanding of benefits and the design/build expertise for execution, posed significant hurdles.
Given GEMM Founder K. Scott Sine PE's trailblazing expertise and reputation in the field, ENGIE MEP subsidiary H.T. Lyons, was retained by Ashland Global to design/build a cost-effective heat recovery system for a 250,000 sf. laboratory, with no interruption to 24-7 operations permitted during construction.
Scott’s innovative design introduced some of the first thermal wheels in the Lehigh Valley for a facility that was originally designed for 100% supply and exhaust. The resulting 50%+ annual energy savings were measured daily and proudly displayed via a lobby wall monitor.
While Scott’s design is now commonplace, at the time it demonstrated how a strong commissioning program affords/promotes innovative design and successful integration of first-of-its-kind designs/technologies, with no risk and/or inconvenience to the client.
