Overview
DaVinci Science Center was presented with a comprehensive HVAC design that was cost prohibitive. ENGIE MEP subsidiary H.T. Lyons was retained for a final assessment of the project before being shelved. GEMM Founder K. Scott Sine PE (Scott) was challenged to masterplan the project at a cost 25% less than the original and without any increase to existing energy consumption.
Scott delivered a first-of-its-kind design / build package utilizing hot water / VAV boxes, and a customized computer program with control system to minimize ventilation air and optimize heating. This innovative solution cost 35% less than the original design, with the added benefit of 25%+ annual energy savings.
While this approach is now an industry standard, it was cutting edge at the time. Scott’s achievement was proudly recognized and honored with a plaque on DaVinci Science Center’s wall of Lehigh Valley “Innovators that make a difference”, joining fellow honorees the founders of Crayola Crayons, Lutron Technologies and Air Products.
The Da Vinci Science Center is a national award-winning non-profit organization that has brought science to life, and lives to science since 1992.
